Only a handful of MCs can make you feel their music that way and JAY-Z is at the top of the list. Everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) was either dancing, drinking, smoking, crying, losing their shit or all of the above. You look into that crowd – not a single person was sitting in their seat.

At 48 years old and 13 albums in, this man can still bring tens of thousands together no matter their gender, race, or religion. Cut to his second song, “No Church In The Wild,” the night was on and poppin for the next 75 minutes. I could feel I wasn’t the only one but that lasted for all of 30 seconds. With the arena near capacity, JAY-Z in all his glory floated from underneath the octagon-shaped stage and effortlessly entered the first bars of 4:44’s “Kill JAY-Z.” I made it a point to avoid reading the official 4:44 Tour set list, which has been circulating online since the tour began, so his choice for the first song threw me off for a moment. While I personally am not familiar with Vic’s music, you can’t deny raw talent when you see it. And that’s exactly what the young MC did. Vic deserved better if you ask me, but a true artist will perform like it’s their last time whether there’s 100 people in the room or 20,000. The Roc Nation artist performed a short set as fans trickled to their seats. Vic Mensa opened the night a tad behind schedule (because hip-hop). Edmonton was one of only four Canadian stops of the North American tour and hip-hop heads from far and wide flocked to Rogers Place for this little piece of history. It’s been nearly a decade since Brooklyn’s finest graced YEG with his presence. Since there aren’t enough words or time that’s worthy of proper review, I will do my best to recap HOV’s Edmonton stop of his 4:44 Tour. but that’s light work for him on a good day. With that said, I could go on to tell you the countless reasons why lyrical assassin, visionary, multi-platinum selling artist, author, business mogul, philanthropist, socially concious, Beyoncé’s baby daddy, etc. There’s no way for me to write this review without my unwavering bias opinion, so I’m going to keep it a buck and just say it: JAY-Z is the greatest and I will meet you in the parking lot about it. It’s really a commentary on the culture and where we’re going.Where to even begin. "It’s like a subtle nod to La La Land winning the Oscar, and then having to give it to Moonlight. "The hook is ‘We stuck in La La Land/Even if we win, we gonna lose,'" he said. In addition to naming one of his 4:44 tracks Moonlight, he also dedicates the song's chorus to the losing film: "We stuck in La La Land, even when we win, we gon' lose."Īccording to Jay's iHeartRadio interview, the song is a direct reference to the 2017 Oscars. La La Land: Jay was obviously rooting for Moonlight to win the 2017 best picture Oscar over La La Land.

track isn't entirely about Simpson, the track's first verse shows the rapper rolling his eyes at one of the disgraced football player's most notorious alleged quotes. Twitter is on fire with reactions to JAY-Z’s ‘4:44’ albumīecky with the Good Hair: "I'll (expletive) up a good thing if you let me / Let me alone, Becky" Jay raps on Family Feud, dispensing with the "Becky" that Beyoncé notoriously mentioned on her Lemonade track Sorry. In this lyric, Jay seems to use Future's situation as a warning to himself to treat his family better, though he appears to slander his I Got the Keys collaborator.Įxclusive: Eric Benét responds to JAY-Z's '4:44'-'Where are my royalties!'

The exes made headlines with their spats over their son, whose dad allegedly didn't like spending time with Wilson. "But you ain't a Saint, this ain't KumbaYe, but you got hurt because you did cool by Ye / You gave him 20 million without blinking, he gave you 20 minutes on stage, (expletive) was he thinking / '(Expletive) wrong with everybody?' is what you saying, but if everybody's crazy, you're the one that's insane."įuture: Many listeners interpreted this lyric on Kill Jay Z as a reference to his fellow rapper: "I don't even know what you woulda done, In the future other (expletive) playin' football with your son."įuture went through a messy split with his ex Ciara, who later married Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.
